National Night Out

National Night Out is an event that is held in communities throughout the United States and locally here in the Fox Valley. The event is designed to bring awareness to crime prevention efforts by (1) heightening crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) generating support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; (3) strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) sending a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods "celebrate" National Night Out with a variety of events and activities such as block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and fire departments, parades, flashlight walks, contests and youth programs.

Please join us for the Town of Menasha National Night Out event on Monday, August 2nd from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Town of Menasha Municipal Complex at 2000 Municipal Dr. in Neenah.

Or for the Oshkosh National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 3rd from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at South Park in Oshkosh.

Parents Who Host Lose the Most

re:TH!NK wants to remind everyone that Parents Who Host Lose the Most: Don't Be a Party to Teenage Drinking is a campaign that is being rolled out across Winnebago County May-June 2010. The coalition is working with police and community groups to provide parents with accurate information about the health risks of underage drinking and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to youth. The campaign encourages parents and other responsible adults to clearly and directly remind family members and close friends that allowing teenage alcohol consumption is illegal and unacceptable.

It is illegal, unsafe, and unhealthy for anyone under age 21 to drink alcohol. Allowing underage youth to drink alcohol in your home endangers everyone's children. Together, as a community, we are all saying hosting or allowing underage drinking is unacceptable in Winnebago County. We'll be cooperating with police efforts to identify and prosecute those who sell and serve alcohol to youth.

WI Goes Smoke-Free July 5

"We can all breathe easier! Come out join us!" That's what Wisconsin businesses are encouraging people to do on July 5, 2010. On that date, Wisconsin will join the other 22 states that are 100% smoke-free in all workplaces, including restaurants and bars.

Wisconsin workers will no longer have to choose between their health and a paycheck, and customers will be able to enjoy a night out without worrying about secondhand smoke. The State Legislature realized the dangers of secondhand smoke and passed a law to protect the health of everyone. The law will prohibit smoking in all indoor workplaces including:

Smoking will also not be allowed in sports arenas of all kinds (Lambeau Field, Miller Park, gymnasiums, swimming pools, skating rinks, etc).

It is everyone's job to enforce the law Smoke-Free Air Law and as seen in other states, the law is largely self-enforcing. The law requires the person in charge of an establishment to ask any person violating the law to stop smoking or leave. In the case of restaurants, bars and private clubs, the establishment must refuse to serve the violator if the person refuses to comply. Businesses cannot provide items such as ashtrays or matches to customers or employees.

Smoke-free air laws are good for health and good for business. Many businesses have decided to embrace the law and have gone smoke-free already, and the list is growing daily. For a list of smoke-free business or to get more information or resources on the Smoke-Free Air Law, please visit www.wibettersmokefree.com or contact your local tobacco control coordinator at 920.232.3021 or email edieringer@co.winnebago.wi.us.

Coins for Community

Please help support the growth of the Winnebago Crime Prevention Fund that is held at the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation. Many law enforcement/prevention programs are supported with grants from this fund. The larger the fund – the more support it provides. Help us grow this fund by $1,000 by “voting” for the fund during October's Coins for Community competition. This month we are competing against Reach Counseling Services in Coins for Community. All you have to do is go to http://www.oshkoshareacf.org/grants_pbg.cfm and click on the coins and put them in our piggy bank. The game will go all month and if we win, we will receive a $1000 grant for the fund. If you guys could pass this on and maybe put it on your face book that would be great!
